The French island of Corsica lies southeast of the mainland and north of Sardinia in the Mediterranean Sea. Rich forests, snow-capped mountains, nature reserves and UNESCO World Heritage Sites await you on land but Corsica definitely delivers on the water too. Visit the surrounding whale and dolphin sanctuaries, explore the sea caves near Bonifacio and marvel at the hundreds of coves and brilliant white beaches of this beautiful sailing area.

Being the most mountainous region in the Mediterranean, Corsica has some fantastic dramatic scenery as well as great anchorages and quaint old town centres. Visit the Maddalena National Park of Sardinia or head up the West Coast of the island to find an abundance of spectacular inlets.

    Suggested 1 week sailing itinerary in Corsica

    DAY 1 : Ajaccio Marina

    Embark at Ajaccio Marina. A restaurant and bar are available within the marina with supermarket and a wider choice of restaurants nearby.

    DAY 2 : Sagone / Cargese (19/22nm)

    Starting your sail north, you will soon realise why the Gulf of Sagone is popular with holidaymakers thanks to its beautiful sandy beaches. Choose to spend the evening in either Sagone or Cargese, both quaint little villages with a friendly atmosphere.

    DAY 3 : Girolata (15nm)

    A leisurely sail today making sure to stop off in the Golfe de Porto to admire the dramatic landscape of the Calanques of Piana. Carry on to Girolata, a small village which is only accessible by foot or boat. Arrive early evening to avoid the day trippers from Porto and to take full advantage of the fantastically clear waters, beautiful scenery and great walking trails.

    DAY 4 : Calvi (22nm)

    An impressive view of the citadel awaits you as you arrive into Calvi. Reputedly the birth place of Christopher Columbus, Calvi oozes charm and is a popular destination for megayachts sailing over from Nice or Cannes. Wander around the cobbled streets of the citadel, admire the 360 degrees views from the top and enjoy fantastic fresh seafood in one of the many little restaurants.

    DAY 5 : Capo Rosso (25nm)

    Leaving Calvi and heading south, stop to enjoy the Golfe de la Revellata before carrying on to Capo Rosso, the westernmost point of the island. Take the hiking trail close to the town of Piana for incredible views of the Calanques, Golfe de Porto and Golfe de Sagone.

    DAY 6 : Bay of Sagone (11nm)

    Choose from either Sagone or Cargese, whichever stop you didn't chose on day 2.

    DAY 7 : Ajaccio Marina (19nm)

    Return to Ajaccio marina and enjoy a final night in this elegant city.

    DAY 1 : Ajaccio Marina

    DAY 2 : Cala di Conca (21nm)

    Starting your sail south through the Gulf of Valinco, you will be met with stunning vistas, rugged mountains and wild hidden beaches. Spend the evening in the beautiful anchorage of Cala di Conca which is only available by boat or on foot.

    DAY 3 : Tizzano (6nm)

    A short sail today means plenty of time for swim stops and exploring hidden bays. Tizzano is a quaint little town in beautiful surroundings which has become popular with holidaymakers wanting a relaxed break.

    DAY 4 : Maddalena National Park (33nm)

    The landscape changes to rocky and wild as you sail past the south coast of Corsica and head south towards Sardinia. The mesmerising turquoise waters of the Maddalena National Park will lure you in time and time again and here you will find some of the most beautiful beaches in the Med. La Maddalena harbour on the main island of the Archipelago is a traditional fishing harbour, picturesque and bustling but it can get very busy in peak season.

    DAY 5 : Cala di Volpe (17nm)

    Sailing south along Sardinia's "Costa Smeralda" why not stop in at Porto Cervo to visit the famous marina with all of its luxury yachts before carrying on to Cala di Volpe.

    DAY 6 : Bonifacio (38nm)

    Heading back to the "Scented Island" and the bustling harbour town of Bonifacio. The impressive citadel towers over you as you enter the harbour. Spend the evening soaking up the atmosphere and wandering the small streets of the Old Town.

    DAY 7 : Ajaccio Marina (40nm)

    A full day's sail today but be sure to fit in a lunchtime swim stop at Campomoro, located at the southern tip of the Gulf of Valino. Return to Ajaccio marina and enjoy a final night in this elegant city.

    Sailing conditions in Corsica

    With winds averaging force 3-5 and a mixture of harbours and anchorages, Corsica makes for a great sailing holiday for intermediate sailors.

    We have rated this destination a 'Level 2' (levels info) and you will need RYA Day Skipper or ICC qualification for bareboat charters in Corsica.

    Flights to Corsica

    Air Corsica have direct flights to Figari, Bastia and Calvi from Stansted on Saturdays.

    Transfers

    Transfer time to the marina is approximately 2 hours from Figari airport, 2.5 hours from Bastia and 3 hours from Calvi.

Sailing Qualifications

To skipper a bareboat charter or flotilla yacht, you need to hold a practical sailing certificate equivalent to RYA Day Skipper Practical qualification or RYA International Certificate of Competence (ICC). For charters in Greece, you must now have the ICC certificate. You must also be assisted by at least one competent crew member over the age of 18.

The port authorities in Greece are now insisting on one of the following practical certificates: RYA ICC (International Certificate of Competence), RYA Coastal, RYA Yachtmaster, ASA IPC (International Proficiency Certificate) or the IYT (International Yacht Training) Passport. If you hold an RYA Day Skipper or ASA104 it will no longer be accepted and you need to obtain either an ICC or IPC from the corresponding issuing body (RYA or ASA). If your RYA Coastal/Yachtmaster or ASA105/106 certificate is more than 12 years old and does not have a photo ID, then we would also strongly advise applying for an ICC or IPC. If you are a member of the RYA or ASA, you may qualify for a discount or free certificate, otherwise, you will have to pay. The approximate cost is £50. Please use this link - RYA application for the ICC or ASA application for the IPC.

For charters in Croatia, Malta and the Canaries, at least one member of the crew or the skipper will also need a VHF licence.

RYA qualifications can be obtained by RYA sailing schools in the UK or alternatively choose from one of our overseas centres in Gibraltar, Greece or Turkey.

For Seychelles, the local authorities require an ICC for the skipper of a bareboat or flotilla yacht charter.

For Caribbean and Tropical charters, formal qualifications are not compulsory, however, you should be Day Skipper standard and be assisted by at least one competent crew. A brief sailing resume should be provided to outline your experience.

If you don't hold the relevant qualifications then why not add a skipper?

Sailing Levels

Level 1

Winds force 2-3 (4-11 Knots)combined with generally shorter distances. Good for beginner or intermediate sailors. Line-of-sight navigation but basic knowledge of charts and ability to plot your position required.

Level 2

Winds force 3-5 (7-21 Knots) with approximately 15-20nm per day. Intermediate experience required. Predominately line of sight navigation but an understanding of how to sail in open water.

Level 3

Winds force 4-6 (11-27 Knots) with mileage of approximately 20nm+ per day. Ideal for experienced skippers looking to venture out to new destinations. Day skipper standard but with experienced crew would be recommended.
